Accompanied by SVdP volunteers, 145 children were given $100 gift cards to shop for new school clothes and shoes – a childhood tradition their families would otherwise not be able to afford in these difficult economic times. The kids each received backpacks outfitted with school supplies thanks to Mervyn’s team members.

OPEN YOUR HEARTS TO THE HOMELESS
The homeless in our community are in great need.  San Mateo County doesn’t have enough shelter beds to care for its residents.  Although the Society of St. Vincent de Paul gives out vouchers for the county shelters, every weekday we turn away about a dozen people for lack of shelter.  The numbers are rising. The best we can offer is a warm, dry sleeping bag. But our empty store room is the problem. We can purchase new bags for about $20 each.  Will you fund the cost of two new sleeping bags for homeless people?

When there’s no affordable indoor shelter, people—even people with jobs—sleep under buildings, in back seats of cars, and on friends’ couches.

Not all our homeless fit the stereotypes, particularly on the Peninsula.

If you can help, please go to Donate page, or mail a check to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of San Mateo County, 50 North B Street, San Mateo, CA 94401, Attention: Sleeping Bags.
