| Vincentians Gather for Annual Ozanam Awards | |
|---|---|
Over 450 Vincentians gathered recently to salute this year’s Ozanam Award honorees. Bishop William Justice and SVdP President Joe Marchetti presented the Ozanam awards to four extraordinary Vincentians who have over the years contributed their time and talents to those in need in our community. Martin Duda serves on the SVdP Board of Directors as Chairman of Extension and Renewal as well as Treasurer for St. Anthony’s Mission in Pescadero. “I feel so blessed to be able to work with all of the Vincentians, both the staff and all of the volunteers. They are the most dedicated people I have met in any aspect of my life - they are just the greatest people! Charley McLaughlin has been a Vincentian since 1992. He was instrumental in establishing and refurbishing SVdP’s Catherine’s Center property. In the mid 1990s, Charley was also involved with the purchase of the property that is now the Redwood City Thrift Store. Charley currently serves as chairman of the property committee on SVdP’s Board of Directors and is treasurer at St. Anthony’s Conference in Menlo Park. Maureen O’Connor noted that fellow Vincentians of Holy Angels Conference have become family. “Over the years the members of Holy Angels Conference have been a source of support for me. We have become a family. I have learned much of the Vincentian vocation as I have watched those who stay and those who leave. I have seen us resolve personality differences and grow in love of one another because we are there to serve God.” Maureen has been a Vincentian since 1990 and is the President of Holy Angels Conference. Tony Rouse was awarded a special Ozanam Service Medallion. An active member of St. Matthew’s Conference, he has been working with SVdP for 35 years. He began in the dining room at St. Anthony’s in 1975 and held various positions until 1993 when he became CFO. Tony has been on over 10,000 home visits since he has started as a volunteer at St. Francis parish in East Palo Alto. The 2010 Benefactors Award was presented to the Agape Foundation for their commitment to share their heart and resources with the underserved in our community. They were honored for their compassionate vision to help the Society provide for the homeless, to be the safety net for those on the brink of homelessness in San Mateo County, to reach out to the incarcerated and to support the women of SVdP’s Catherine’s Center.
